NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men’s volleyball team suffered a tough 3-0 (13-25, 17-25, 18-25) sweep at the hands of the Nipissing Lakers Saturday evening at the Robert J Surtees Athletic Centre.
Both teams came into the contest riding four game winning streaks and eying a fifth straight victory.
The Lakers overpowered the Rams from start to finish in the win. A 25-13 first set victory looked to forecast what was to come in the remaining sets. The Rams looked poised midway through the set with the score even 12-12, but the Lakers found the floor for 12 straight points en route to the lopsided first set victory.
The Rams continued to battle after the disappointing opening set and went head to head again for the first half of the second set. The play of Jack Peckham proved to be too much for the Rams to handle on the block as he helped lead the Lakers to a 25-17 second set win.
The Rams’ Lucas Coleman began to heat up a tad in the third after a slow start to the match but it was to no avail as the Lakers swept the Rams with a 25-18 third set victory.
Coleman and Brendan Kewin both finished the game with negative kill efficiencies, as they simply couldn’t penetrate the stellar defense of the Lakers.
Lyndon Sonego, Curtis MacPherson, and Cameron Branch led the way for the Lakers with eight kills each.
With the victory, the Lakers now own sole possession of first place in the East division with a 7-1 record and take a two-point lead over the Rams who sit in second with a 7-4 record.
The Rams return to the Mattamy Athletic Centre next Friday and Saturday in bouts with the Queen's Gaels and the RMC Paladins.
