TORONTO - Less than 24 hours after a five set, come from behind victory over the Queen’s Gaels, the Ryerson Rams men’s volleyball team used that momentum to knock off the RMC Paladins 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-13) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Saturday night.
After missing the Queen’s game due to injury, Ryerson’s Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) racked up a game-high 14 kills. Meanwhile, Brendan Kewin (Milton, Ont.) followed up a career-best 20 kill performance the night before with 12 smashes on 20 attacks. Setters Adam Anagnostopoulos (Waterloo, Ont.) and Tom McCabe (Kingston, Ont.) combined for 36 assists.
The Rams were able to jump ahead to quick leads in each of the three sets. That gave interim head coach Matthew Harris the opportunity to mix in his bench throughout the game and give some new faces a bit of OUA experience. In total, 13 different players hit the floor for Ryerson and many took advantage of their playing time.
Second year outside hitter Isaac McKeague (Ottawa, Ont.) posted a career-best eight kills while McCabe’s 15 assist night was also a new career high. On top of that, first-year Zach Underhill (Barrie, Ont.) made his U SPORTS debut in the first set.
Toronto native Blake McClelland led the Paladins with ten kills while Dale Towe added eight.
The victory bumps Ryerson’s record to 9-4 and vaults them into first place in the OUA East division for the time being. The Nipissing Lakers (8-1) sit in second with four games in hand.
RMC falls to 2-11. Their eighth straight loss keeps them in sixth place.
The Rams are back in action next Saturday when they host the Brock Badgers (2-7) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The action is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m.NOTES: Coleman’s strong performance keeps him atop the province in kills per set with 4.41. That number currently puts him third in all of U SPORTS… The Rams have now won three of their four games in 2017 and six of their last seven regular season contests… Ryerson finished with a hitting percentage of .419. That’s the best mark they’ve put up so far this season.
