ST. CATHARINES, Ont.- For the second year in a row, Mississauga native Joanna Kolbe has captured the Dr. Al English Trophy after claiming gold in the individual épée competition at the OUA Women's Fencing Championships, which took place from February 18-19 at Brock University.
Before Kolbe's arrival at Ryerson in 2010-11, the Rams fencing progam had never won a medal in the épée competition. Now, Kolbe has earned two golds in as many seasons. Veronika Dinkelacker, who was defeated by her teammate in the semi-finals, finished fourth and garnered OUA all-star honours along with Kolbe.
The Rams also took home gold in the team épée competition for the first time in team history, finishing first amongst 10 schools on the second day of the championships. The team consisted of Kolbe, Dinkelacker, Kristen Wavryk and Priya Persaud.
The Carleton Ravens captured the OUA banner for the first time since 2009-10.
