TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team opened up their season by setting a new record for the most goals scored in a single game.

In their first regular season game of the year, the Rams defeated the York Lions by a final score of 7-2.  Expectations were shattered in today’s victory, as the Rams dominated both offensively and defensively against York.

The first goal of the season was awarded to Ryerson’s Athlete of the Week and rookie Melanie Camacho (Whitby, Ont.).  As the first period ended, Ryerson would tally their first power play goal of the game, scored by Lauren Nicholson (Dresden, Ont.).  Ryerson would go on to score three more goals on the man-advantage in the game.

In a tough physical matchup, the York Lions took 16 minor penalties during the game, while the Rams, on the other hand, took 9. Ryerson’s power play ended the game at 33%, going 4 for 12 on the man advantage.

“I thought our special teams were really solid today,” said coach Lisa Haley after the game.  “To score four on the power play is great.  I think it’s an area we weren’t happy with last year, and for us to be able to get off on the right foot in the first game of the season is a good sign.”

Ryerson’s newly-named captain, Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.), scored a goal late in the second to put Ryerson up 4-0 over the Lions.  Forfar said it was great to see the team open up the season on a positive note.

“Everyone was having fun out there, and we got a lot of offense from a lot of people on the team,” said the captain.  “It’s great to see that spread out throughout all ages and all different lines.”

The Ryerson Rams will travel to Guelph on Thursday evening to take on the defending champions in their second game of the season.  The team will be back at home next Sunday, October 22 for their home opener, taking on the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at 2:15 pm.
