Strong UOIT power play burns Rams

By Jessica Pincente

OSHAWA, Ont. - In an unfortunate loss for the Ryerson Rams, the UOIT Ridgebacks would ultimately combine puck luck with a strong power play, besting the Rams by a final score of 5-4.

BOXSCORE

Ryerson’s Karli Nummikoski (Thunder Bay, Ont.) would open the scoring for her team, tallying her first goal of the season with four minutes left to play in the first period. Soon after, the Ridgebacks would steal Ryerson’s lead with only 40 seconds to play in the period, and the teams would head into the dressing room tied at one.

A strong start to the second saw goals from Kryshanda Green (Brampton, Ont.) and Ailish Forfar (Sharon, Ont.), and the Rams took a 3-1 lead midway through the game.  Green’s second period goal snapped her eight-game goalless drought, an uncharacteristically long streak for one of the team’s most talented forwards.

Back-to-back penalties would prove costly for the Rams in the remainder of the second, as the Ridgebacks capitalized on three power play opportunities in six minutes to claim a 4-3 lead by the end of the period.

To add insult to injury, UOIT would score once more in the third period off yet another power play, extending their lead to two.  Ryerson’s Alyssa Connolly (Mount Albert, Ont.) notched her first goal of the season with 40 seconds to play in the game, but the Rams ultimately fell short as the game ended in a 5-4 victory for the Ridgebacks.

With five goals in the matchup, UOIT  would surpass their highest offensive output of the season, their previously highest-scoring game coming in a 3-2 victory over the Nipissing Lakers.

Ryerson’s power play, once first in the league, went 0-for-7 against UOIT.  The team has tallied only a single power play goal through their last three games, going 1/20 in that timespan.

Looking ahead, the Rams will face the OUA’s top-ranked team, the Queen’s Gaels, in their final game of the semester.  The Gaels hold an 8-2-0-1 record on the season, and are perfect in their home arena.  Ryerson will need to play their absolute best against Queen’s if they want to end 2017 on a winning note.
