Stars of the Week
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams are pleased to announce the following student-athletes as the Stars of the Week, ending October 7th.
Laura Ball - Hockey - 4th Year - RTA: Sport Media
In the final week of preseason action for the women's hockey team, the fourth year defender had a strong performance in both of the Rams games this week. Ball assisted on the team's opening goal in a loss to York before playing shutdown defence against Toronto in an overtime win on Friday night. Ball and the rest of the team play their home opener this Sunday afternoon.
Christiana Daniel - Soccer - 3rd Year - Civil Engineering
Daniel had two strong games in the Rams' midfield in their matches against Carleton and Ottawa this weekend. On Saturday, Daniel had the Ravens guessing as to where she would distribute the ball as she executed several accurate flick passes onto her teammates. Daniel wasn't just the passer, either, as she connected for the team's only goal of the weekend.
Theanna Vernon - Volleyball - 5th Year - Social Work
Vernon had a strong weekend for the Rams at McMaster's Thanksgiving tournament where Ryerson posted a 3-0 record and won the gold medal. The fifth year was strong at the net with several key blocks and momentum-swinging kills, and executed well from the service line to put her opponents on the defensive right away. Vernon and the Rams continue their preseason this weekend.
Matt Mistele - Hockey - 3rd Year - Criminology
Mistele had a night to remember in the Rams' season opener on Wednesday night. The third year forward scored just 14 seconds into the game and went on to add three assists as Ryerson routed Waterloo 10-1. Mistele leads the league in points, despite playing just one game this week.
Mathew Santos - Hockey - 2nd Year - Geographic Analysis
In his first OUA regular season game, Santos netted his first hat trick, scoring three goals to lead Ryerson's offence to a 10-1 victory. All of Santos' goals came during special team scenarios - twice on the power play and once shorthanded.
Christian Westlaken - Soccer - 1st Year - Business Management
Westlaken played a strong defensive game against the No. 6 ranked Carleton Ravens on Saturday. Westlaken got the start and made several key tackles and clearances to keep the Ravens' potent offence at bay. The first year defender has shown a lot of growth this season and looks to have solidified his role.
