Rams look to start off 2018 with pair of wins

By Ryan Bacic

TORONTO – The Rams men's hockey team will be looking to keep their regular season winning ways alive as they head into their first two games of 2018 on Friday, January 5 against the Laurier Golden Hawks, and on Saturday, January 6 against the Western Mustangs.

Friday’s contest will see the Rams travel to Waterloo to take on Laurier, the OUA’s fourth-seeded team in the West.  Friday night's match-up will be the second time the two teams have met thus far this season, with the previous contest, held on October 25, resulting in a hard-fought 4-3 Ryerson shootout victory.  Since then, the Golden Hawks have accumulated a 7-4 record across the last 11 games, showcasing a playing style that is often inconsistent against capable opponents.  As such, the Golden Hawks have gone on to lose three times to teams that they have previously beaten, being outworked offensively during each occasion.

In contrast, the Rams head into their contest with the Golden Hawks coming off of a three-game winning streak, with a new found spark in their play.  Through the combination of increased offensive contributions from rookie players, and the consistent dominance of netminder Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.), the Rams are a significantly different team than the Golden Hawks found in October.

Following the contest with the Golden Hawks, the Rams will head back to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday night, for a matchup with the Western Mustangs. In their first home game of 2018, the Rams will be taking on the Mustangs for the second time this season, with their last interaction being decided handily with a 5-2 Rams victory in London.  While the Mustangs have not had the best season thus far, coming into the Mattamy with a 5-11 record, they managed to round off 2017 with a huge 7-3 upset victory over the Windsor Lancers. Now notorious for upsetting teams of a greater caliber, the Mustangs will be looking to capitalize upon their recent success on Saturday night.

Fans of the Rams will be able to catch all of Friday night’s action on at 7:07 pm.   Additionally, fans are encouraged to come out to watch Saturday night’s contest at 7:15 pm, however for those who cannot not make it, the game will be broadcast on and live updates will be provided on the Rams twitter account @ryersonrams.
