Former Ram Birkhoff named Valley Wildcats assistant coach

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - Former Ryerson Rams men’s hockey alternate captain Brian Birkhoff has been named as an assistant coach of the Maritime Hockey League’s Valley Wildcats.

The Wildcats, a Jr. A team based in Berwick, N.S., announced the hiring on August 8, 2018.

“Brian will be a great addition to our coaching staff,” said Wildcats General Manager Nick Greenough in the team’s press release. “His impressive and varied playing experience will be of great benefit to our defencemen. Brian is a natural leader who wore a letter throughout his playing days, so we expect his transition to coaching will be a seamless one.”

Birkhoff spent five years at Ryerson, wearing the ‘A’ for four seasons. The defenceman was named an OUA East All-Rookie after tallying 13 points in 28 games as a freshman.  In 128 career U SPORTS games, Birkhoff recorded 10 goals and 48 assists.

After leaving Ryerson in 2016, Birkhoff signed his first professional contract with Åmåls SK in the second-tier Swedish league. He signed with Denmark’s Herlev Eagles just one year later, appearing in 48 games for the Danish team.

The full Valley Wildcats release can be found here. The team is set to open their regular season campaign on September 13, 2018, against the Pictou County Weeks Crushers.
