TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams men's hockey team and the Ryerson Department of Athletics are pleased to announce Mathew Santos as their eighth recruit of the offseason.
The Etobicoke, Ont. native spent last season with the Toledo Walleye of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), affiliates of the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings. Due to OUA and U SPORTS eligibility rules, Santos will have to redshirt the 2017-18 season due to his year playing professional hockey. He will suit up for the Rams beginning in 2018-19.
Santos describes himself as a "hard-working athlete, determined to reach my full potential."
“We are very excited to add a player of Mathew's caliber to our hockey program. He possesses tremendous leadership qualities that we coveted during the recruiting process, and his major junior and professional experience will be a great asset for our team both on and off the ice,” said Rams head coach Johnny Duco. “Once eligible, we see Mathew as a top-end student-athlete in the OUA.”
Along with his time in the ECHL, Santos says the highlight of his athletic career is a split between winning the 2011 OFSAA Hockey Championship with Michael Power/St. Joseph C.H.S, and winning the OHL's Eastern Conference championship with the North Bay Battalion in 2013-14.
"I chose Ryerson because it's close to home and it's an amazing school,” said Santos. “Also, the campus and the facilities that it has in place will help me succeed.”
Santos will be enrolled in Ryerson's Arts & Contemporary Studies program beginning in September.
