Rams looking to round out 2017 with pair of wins

By Ryan Bacic

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams have been up and down across their past few games, as they head into their final two contests before the winter break.  Having just come off of a road trip to our nation’s capital, which saw them beat the Carleton Ravens 5-3 while losing to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-3 in a shootout, the Rams will be looking to round out 2017 with two solid wins as they face off against the Western Mustangs on Thursday in London, and the York Lions on Saturday at the Mattamy

Thursday’s match-up against Western at Thompson Arena sees the first of two contests this season between the two teams.  Heading into Thursday night, the Mustangs have had a rough-go of this season, holding a record of 4-10 and sitting second-last in the OUA’s Western conference.  However, when comparing the outcomes of teams that both the Rams and the Mustangs have played against, Thursday night's match-up may prove to be more difficult than imagined for the visiting Rams.

The only four wins that the Mustangs have been able to acquire this season have been against Queen’s, Windsor, Laurier, and Ottawa.  In all cases, the victories were rather easily acclaimed, as Western often held their opponents to two goals or less.  Additionally, these are all teams the Rams have lost to previously, suggesting the Mustangs may be able to provide some surprises to teams that seem above their caliber.

In contrast, the opponent that is awaiting the Rams on Saturday have thus far had a rather successful 2017-2018 season.  The York Lions will storm the Mattamy on Saturday night, boasting a 10-4-1 record, ranked second in the Western conference.  Additionally, Saturday’s contest will mark the second time that the two teams have met this season, where the last contest, played on October 28, saw the Lions come away with 4-1 win over the Rams.

However, heading into this contest the Lions normally dominant playing has seem to have been shaken.  The Lions have lost three of their past four contests, falling to the likes of Waterloo, Windsor and Ottawa.  Additionally, prior to making the trip to the Mattamy, the Lions will be hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks, the team which handed them the first loss of their season.

If the Rams are indeed catching the Lions at a low-point in their season, this match-up may prove to be more even than what paper may illustrate.

Thursday’s game will be available to all fans, live from London, on at 7:00 pm.  For Saturday night's contest, fans are encouraged to come out to the Mattamy to support to the Rams, but the game will also be available on at 7:15 pm for those who cannot make it downtown.  Additionally, fans can catch live updates of the games by following the Ryerson Rams on twitter @ryersonrams.
