Rams home doubleheader features rematches with Toronto, Brock

By Ryan Bacic

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams are coming off an up-and-down start to the 2018 season heading into this week’s doubleheader on home ice.  In a two-game stint that saw them overcome the Laurier Golden Hawks with a huge 7-1 victory then fall in a come-from-behind loss to the Western Mustangs, the Rams will be looking to regain momentum as they host the University of Toronto on Thursday, followed by the Brock Badgers on Friday.

Thursday’s match-up against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues will mark the second time the two cross-town rivals have met this season, with the previous iteration of this contest having been decided with a 5-2 victory in favour of the Rams. Heading into Thursday night’s game, the Blues presently sit at the bottom of the OUA’s Western conference boasting a record of 5-12-1. In the nine match-ups since the Blues last met the Rams, they have only managed to acclaim two wins in that span, while allowing 37 goals against and scoring only 22 goals of their own.

Additionally, the Blues presently rank last in the league in the majority of offensive-related categories including goals, assists, shots per game, and power-play goals. As such, they are going to have to put up a fight if they hope to overcome a talented Rams line-up on home ice.

In contrast to the struggles of the Varsity Blues, the Brock Badgers, have thus far been having a fairly consistent 2017-18 season. Heading into the Mattamy Athletic Centre with a 9-6-3 record, and currently sitting fifth in the OUA’s Western conference, Friday night’s contest will be the second time the Badgers and Rams have met thus far this season. In their previous match-up held on November 8, the Badgers were able to pull off the upset and ran away with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Rams.

Since that time, the Badgers' season has been on the upswing as they have gone 6-3 in their past nine games. However, the Badgers will have their work cut out for them as they head into the Mattamy, as they must now face off against a surging 12-4-2 Rams squad that is looking to climb atop the OUA’s Western conference.
