Barwell latest addition to Rams' forward group

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - Jesse Barwell has become the latest recruit to be added to the Ryerson Rams men’s hockey roster, as announced by the team on Wednesday.

Barwell, an Oakville, Ont. native, is coming to the university after a jaw-dropping season with the Caledonia Corvairs of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL). With four years of OHL experience under his belt, the centreman is set to suit up for the Rams at the start of the 2018-19 season.

“Jesse will be joining the Ryerson hockey program after an impressive junior career,” says Rams head coach Johnny Duco. “He is an excellent skater and has a high hockey IQ.”

After tallying 93 points in 50 games with the Corvairs last season, Barwell was awarded the Pat Murphy Memorial Trophy as the GOJHL’s top scorer. Prior to his time with Caledonia, Barwell spent four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), splitting time between the Mississauga Steelheads (2013-2014) and the Saginaw Spirit (2014-2017).  In 254 career OHL games, Barwell put up 29 goals and 62 assists.

“Jesse will add speed and skill to our line-up and should be an excellent U SPORTS student-athlete for years to come,” says Duco.

Barwell joins his former Saginaw Spirit teammates, Gregory DiTomaso (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.), both of whom chose Ryerson for their university careers after the OHL.

Barwell will enter Ryerson’s Arts and Contemporary Studies program in September.
