Ahilan named OUA Athlete of the Week
BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Investors Group Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week, powered by 2XU, for the period ending October 31st, 2017.
Male Athlete of the Week – Praveen Ahilan (Unionville, Ont.) - 4th Year - Ryerson Rams
Postseason soccer has been front and centre this past week, and making his mark in a pair of playoff games was Ryerson’s Praveen Ahilan.
The senior goalkeeper was instrumental in leading the Rams to a pair of playoff wins this past week, including a penalty kicks victory in the quarter-final to send the team back to the Final Four tournament.
On Wednesday, Ahilan posted a cleansheet win over Queen's to set up an all-Toronto quarter-final. On Sunday afternoon, Ahilan made two saves in regulation and extra time before stealing the spotlight in the penalty kicks. Ahilan stopped three straight Varsity Blues shooters to allow the Rams to capitalize and win 3-2. The Rams will play top-seed York in the semifinal on Friday afternoon.
Female Athlete of the Week – Branna MacDougall (Kingston, Ont.) - 2nd Year - Queen’s Gaels
It was a big weekend from Branna MacDougall of the Queen’s Gaels women's cross country team.
The No.1 nationally ranked Queen’s women’s cross country team took home the OUA championship in Windsor on the weekend, led by an outstanding gold medal performance from MacDougall. The second-year Gaels runner finished first overall in the women's 8km race, earning OUA MVP and OUA First Team All-Star honours. MacDougall crossed the finish line in 27:19.5 – more than three seconds clear of the second place runner.
Not only did MacDougall’s individual efforts help lead the Gaels to their first cross country title since 2003 – sitting 25 points clear of the silver medalists – but it also help them to dethrone the 13-time reigning champion Guelph Gryphons to cement through No. 1 national ranking.
