Timpany shines as Rams dominate Paladins
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women’s volleyball team was firing on all cylinders against the RMC Paladins in OUA regular season action on Coca-Cola Court Saturday afternoon. Powered by the strong play of first year setter Mady Timpany (Woodstock, Ont.), the Rams hit over 43% in their 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-9. 25-12) of the Paladins. She finished with a career-best 34 assists.
“Mady put up a lot of really hittable balls for our attackers and she was spreading out the offence well and making sure to force the middle,” said Ryerson assistant coach Emily Betteridge afterwards. “These are all things that we’ve been working on so it’s nice to see them in the game.”
Timpany was steady and confident despite the wide variety of attackers that she played alongside throughout the match. With none of the sets ever in doubt, Rams’ head coach Dustin Reid gave court time to each of the 13 players that he had dressed for the contest. That can be a lot to ask of a young setter, but Timpany stepped up to the challenge.
“It’s definitely difficult because you have to think about the spread, where the blockers are likely going to be keying on and also whether or not your hitter is warm or feeling good,” said Betteridge, a former setter for Ryerson. “So, there’s a lot to think about, but I thought she did a great job with it in the match and I look forward to see what she can do going forward.”
Kristine Yan (Markham, Ont.) led all players with eight kills while Becky Zeeman (Ottawa, Ont.) had six on seven attacks. Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) added five kills and two-and-a-half blocks. Yan also had a game-high seven digs.
Kara Stephan led RMC with five kills while Logan Rook and Julia Krebs-Vandeloosdrecht both had three.
The win bumps the Rams’ record to 10-3 and extends their winning streak to five. They remain in second place in the OUA East division behind the No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues (11-0). The Paladins, meanwhile, drops to 0-13 this season and remain in the division’s basement.
