TORONTO — With the invaluable experience of their first national championship appearance under their belts, the Ryerson Rams women's volleyball team will kick off their 2017-18 season with a hunger to return to the big stage.
After hosting the 2017 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball National Championship, the Rams now have an appreciation of what it takes to compete against Canada's best, and will begin their journey to Laval against the Best in the West, the McMaster Marauders.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2017 | RAMS AT MCMASTER — REGULAR SEASON OPENER
McMaster won the OUA's West division in 2016-17 with a 16-3 record. The Rams will be very familiar with the Marauders, having been eliminated by them in last season's OUA semifinal in a three-set sweep. The regular season opener will be Ryerson's one and only meeting with Mac in the 2017-18 regular season, so picking up a win in their first game of the year against one of the conference's best schools would be a great way to kick off their season.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017 | RAMS VS. LAKEHEAD — HOME OPENER
The very next night after their regular season opener, Ryerson will start their home schedule against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Lakehead ended the season on the opposite side of the OUA West standings than McMaster, finishing last with a record of 4-15. During last season's northern roadtrip, the Rams beat the Thunderwolves 3-1 in Thunder Bay in their regular season finale. Ryerson was a formidable 9-and-5 on Coca-Cola Court last season, and they'll look to get off on the right foot in their home opener.
SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 2018 | RAMS VS. TORONTO — BATTLE FOR DIVISION AND FOR DOWNTOWN TORONTO
After dropping just nine sets last season on their way to a perfect 19-0 record, the Toronto Varsity Blues sent shockwaves through the OUA when they dropped their semifinal game in a five-set thriller to the Western Mustangs (19-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 14-16), eliminating them from Nationals contention — their sole loss of the season. The Varsity Blues will be determined not to let that happen again, and will look to flex their muscle once again over the OUA. However, facing their crosstown rivals will be no easy task, as Ryerson has something to prove themselves this year: that they are a team who is capable of qualifying for nationals. It is their last of two regular season meetings in 2017-18 and if Ryerson is able to play dominate volleyball throughout the course of the season, they could be in a position to take the OUA East division from Toronto. In order to do so, they will have to come ready to battle against Toronto, who has been the OUA East's (and previously the OUA's) top team since 2013-14.
