Rams look to continue winning ways against Excalibur

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - After an ideal 2-0 start to open up the season, the Ryerson Rams will hope to keep their winning streak alive in this weekend’s matchup against the Trent Excalibur.

The Rams saw a crucial victory last Friday against the McMaster Marauders, the reigning OUA champions, coming back after being down by two sets and winning the game 3-2.  The Rams continued their streak Saturday night in their home-opener against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, sweeping the team 3-0 in yet another solid victory.

Looking ahead, Ryerson will travel to Peterborough on Sunday afternoon to take on the Trent Excalibur.  The Rams were 2-0 last season against Trent, and faced the team twice early in the preseason this year.  Though the Rams gathered several dominant wins against the team, sweeping Trent 3-0 in both games, head coach Dustin Reid said those preseason games do not matter in the context of the regular season.

“Both teams were mixing up some different lineups and giving different players a chance to play,” said Reid. “I think we need to erase that weekend of matches with them from our memory and focus on going in there and preparing for the players who played a lot for them this weekend for them, focusing on that video, and just trying to put our best foot forward and perform against [Trent].”

Trent has gone 0-2 through two regular season games this year.  In their season-opening matchup, the Excalibur were swept by RMC.  Two days later, they suffered a 3-1 loss to the Lakehead Thunderwolves.  Despite their record, Reid says the Excalibur are not a team to sleep on.

“Trent is another team like Lakehead; if you give them oxygen, they can be very hard to play against,” said the coach. “They serve aggressive, they defend well, they challenge your block and so, when those teams are on, they’re hard to play against.”

Sunday’s game will take place at 1:00 pm at the Trent Athletic Centre in Peterborough, Ont.  Be sure to follow along on Twitter with @RyersonRams.
