No. 2 Rams looking to stay unbeaten against Kingston teams
TORONTO — After opening the season with a promising win against the Brock Badgers, the No. 2 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams are looking to extend their unbeaten streak as they host the Queen’s Gaels and RMC Paladins this weekend.
A 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) victory over the Badgers last Wednesday saw the team start the 2018-19 season on a positive note; many of the Rams rookies stepped up in the win, helping to re-solidify Ryerson’s place at the top of the country.
Freshman setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) had 36 assists and 11 digs in her OUA debut while outside hitter Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) tallied six kills and eight digs in the win.
This weekend, the Rams will host two familiar opponents in the Gaels and the Paladins.
Queen’s is set to come to town on Friday evening to face off in what’s shaping up to be the Rams’ first real challenge of the regular season. The Gaels enter the weekend with a 1-1 record, sweeping the Windsor Lancers on Saturday but dropping a 3-2 game to the Western Mustangs on Sunday.
The Gaels finished third in the OUA East last season with a 13-6 record, two of those six losses coming against the Rams late in the season.
Saturday evening, Ryerson will take on RMC to finish off the weekend homestand. The Rams haven’t lost a match to the Paladins since October 21, 2011, and the team will hope to extend that streak into the 2018-19 season.
The Rams tallied two sweeps over the Paladins last year, and RMC went on to finish last in the OUA East with a 2-17 record in 2017-18. But, with a new season comes a new team and new opportunities, and, as always, the Paladins will do their best to come out on top of the matchup.
First serve on both Friday and Saturday is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. If you can’t make it out this weekend, catch all the action live on OUA.tv or stay updated by following the Ryerson Rams on Twitter (@RyersonRams).
