No. 5 Rams anticipating clash with No. 4 Warriors
TORONTO — In just a few days, the Ryerson Rams will confront the most difficult challenge they will likely face in the 2018-19 regular season, taking on the undefeated Waterloo Warriors on Friday and the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The No. 5 Rams suffered a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25) loss at the hands of the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues last Friday night and went on to tally a 3-0 (25-14. 25-16, 25-13) sweep over the Trent Excalibur the next day. The Rams would officially clinch a playoff berth after the win over Trent, becoming the first team in their division to sure up their place in the postseason.
The Rams are now gearing up for two upcoming weekend matchups against cross-division opponents in the Waterloo Warriors and the Guelph Gryphons.
First up, the Rams will clash with the Warriors in a game that both teams have had circled on their calendars for a very long time. Waterloo just recently overtook the Rams in the weekly U SPORTS top ten rankings to become the top-seeded team in the OUA, and Ryerson will look to avenge this advancement on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The undefeated Warriors have ridden their hot streak through the duration of the regular season. Putting together a perfect season is something quite familiar to the Rams, and the defending national champions will undoubtedly do their best to assert themselves over the Warriors on Friday night.
Fans will want to arrive early to secure their seat on Friday, as Waterloo will be sending a fan bus to the MAC!
Saturday will present a different type of challenge for the Rams as they get set to face the streaking Gryphons at 6:00 p.m. on the Coca-Cola Court. With a 7-7 record this year, the Gryphons sit two points back of the final OUA West playoff spot. They’ve earned a few impressive victories on the season, highlighted by a 3-1 win over the Western Mustangs in the fall, and are certainly capable of pulling off an upset.
The Rams will need to put up their best fight this weekend if they hope to hold their spot at the top of the division. And, with just three weeks remaining in the regular season, each passing match becomes of increasing importance.
Tickets for this weekend’s games can be purchased here. If you’re unable to make it out to this weekend’s games, tune into OUA.tv at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday to catch the action live.
