Let's Strikeout Breast Cancer campaign raises over $500

By Sean Addis

During the holiday season it is common to the look back on the moments and accomplishments that have passed in the last year. When reflecting on the Ryerson Rams baseball team season, they didn’t go as deep into the playoffs as they had hoped but they achieved something greater off the diamond.

The baseball team ran their second Let’s Strikeout Breast Cancer (LKBC) campaign that was initiated by players Luke Bellus, Jared Armstrong and Kevin MacDonald.  Besides the other great work the team does the beyond game within the athletic community and Ryerson as a whole, they created this initiative to raise money for breast cancer research.

On September 23rd, against the Western Mustangs, the Rams held their second annual Think Pink Game.  Ryerson students came on a fan bus and players and umpires donned pink to raise awareness.  During the game, there was also a #LKBC campaign on Twitter after each Rams pitcher strikeout.

However, this year they expanded the fundraising initiative to include the selling of LKBC shirts. Once all the shirts were sold the campaign raised 600 dollars.  A donation was made in the team’s name to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

“All of the money donated was from the sale of T-shirts” said Bellus.  “This year was amazing because all of the guys came together and helped make it happen. Guys gave their time to help sell shirts during the days leading up to the game.  We had a goal of raising $500 and we were able to surpass it.”

During the holiday season it is important to remember the gift of giving.  The Rams baseball team in 2017 did their part to give back and be a great example of generosity in athletics.  Go Rams Go!
