Rams look to close out 2017 with win streak intact

By Christian Ryan

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams are on a roll going into their final matches before winter break. Boasting a four-game winning streak, the Rams look to close out 2017 on a high note, travelling to U of T to face the Varsity Blues on Wednesday, then hosting the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday.

Wednesday’s rivalry match against U of T at the Goldring Centre will mark the first of two contests this year between the two Toronto-based rivals. Throughout the season thus far, both teams have been equal every step of the way. Facing the same opponents, their records have been nearly identical, including both teams defeating the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks this previous weekend.

The Thunderwolves, on the other hand, have struggled in 2017. In their last showing before the winter break, Lakehead will hope to put up a fight at Ryerson to close out the semester on a high note. Currently sitting at the bottom of the OUA West with an 0-8 record, they will have their work cut out for them against a hot 6-2 Rams team.

Previously marred by injuries to key players, the Rams are seeing these missing pieces of the puzzle return in the form of Adam Voll (Kitchener, Ont.) and Manny Diressa (Toronto, Ont.). While the rest of the Rams, including a few standout new faces, stepped up to fill the void, the return of Diressa in particular could be seen as a turning point for the team. Putting up a 24-point showing in his second game back from a long injury absence, the dominance he displayed over Laurier marked his return to the forefront of OUA basketball.

“Manny, as he continues to get his legs under him, as he continues to find his rhythm, he’s showing the player that he is,” assistant coach Borko Popic said, “and as he finds his rhythm he’s showing what kind of calibre he is.”

Wednesday, the Rams will make the short drive over to U of T’s campus to face off against the U of T Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre. Saturday, the last Rams basketball game at the Mattamy Athletic Centre of 2017 will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves as the Rams close out a promising first half of the season.
