Rams kick off 2018 with gold medal rematch
TORONTO - If a new year means a new start, the healthy and rested Ryerson Rams hope to hit the ground running.
The Rams will kick off the second half of their season in the nation’s capital, facing the OUA-leading Carleton Ravens on Friday night, followed by the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday.
After a back-and-forth start to the season, the Rams head into 2018 having found their stride. Capping off 2017 with a six-game winning streak, the Rams lineup could only gain from the added rest of the Winter break as the team nursed a few injuries in the first half. This includes Manny Diressa, who has put up three 20+ point games in his first four back since injury.
“Individually, it’s an opportunity for guys to get stronger, to take care of their bodies,” assistant coach Borko Popic said ahead of the break. “Then for us as a team to spend some time tightening some things to get ready for January and the second half.”
The weekend kicks off Friday night with a rematch between the Rams and the Ravens for their first matchup since the 2016-2017 U SPORTS gold medal game in Halifax. Carleton is boasting a title-defending form, going undefeated across 10 games to start the season and outscoring their opposition by a dizzying 893 to 588.
Saturday night, the Rams will face the Gee-Gees, with whom they share an 8-2 record and a tie for second in the OUA East standings. Ottawa ended 2017 on a high, first by toppling the first domino to halt the Brock Badger’s perfect start to the season, capping off with an overtime nail biter over McMaster to go into the break with a five-game winning streak.
The Carleton Ravens host the Ryerson Rams Friday, Jan. 5 at 8pm ET at the Ravens' Nest, followed by the Ottawa Gee-Gees hosting the Rams Saturday, Jan. 6 8pm ET at Montpetit Hall. Rams fans can follow the action live on OUA.tv.
