Rams welcome two-time OUA All-Star Tevaun Kokko to roster
TORONTO — Ryerson’s men’s basketball team announced Wednesday the addition of Laurier Golden Hawks transfer Tevaun Kokko to the team’s 2019-20 recruiting class.
A two-time OUA Second-Team All-Star, Kokko is set to join the Rams in September.
“We are very excited to welcome Tevaun to our program,” says Rams coach Borko Popic. “He is a dynamic guard, a veteran player in the OUA and brings a wealth of experience to our backcourt.”
Kokko, a point guard from Markham, Ont., put up consistent numbers across two seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18) with the Golden Hawks. He averaged 19.2 points and 3.1 assists in 31 minutes per game in his freshman season, leading his team in scoring (384 points in 20 regular season contests) and earning OUA All-Rookie and Second-Team All-Star honours.
His sophomore season was equally as impressive; Kokko ranked sixth in the OUA with 425 points across 22 regular-season games, adding 1.6 steals, 3.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. His 87.9 free throw percentage ranked third in the league.
Kokko would repeat as an OUA Second-Team All-Star in 2017-18. He also earned Laurier team MVP honours two years in a row.
The third-year guard says he chose to attend Ryerson because he feels he can achieve success at the university.
“I feel at this stage in my life Ryerson can help me be successful on and off the court as well as with my future aspirations,” says Kokko.
Kokko is set to enter Ryerson’s Arts and Contemporary Studies program in the fall.
