Rams look to round out road trip with success
TORONTO – Sitting seventh in U SPORTS national rankings, the Ryerson Rams men's basketball team is heading into its first back-to-back weekend of the 2017-2018 OUA basketball season.
Spending Friday at the Windsor Lancers and Saturday at the Western Mustangs, the Rams enter the final matches of their season-opening road trip already proven winners this season. In their season-opening victory at Algoma, the team highlighted new talent that we can expect to see more of throughout the season.
“The game versus Algoma provided a great opportunity for our some of our younger players to get extended court time,” assistant coach Borko Popic said. “We are excited to see their progress as they continue to get comfortable with our system and the competition level of our league.”
Friday night’s game in Windsor sees both teams enter with 1-0 records. The Lancers opened their season by defeating the Guelph Gryphons in a closely contested bout that saw Windsor hold a slight advantage throughout the majority of the game. In last season’s matchup between the teams, the Rams took the 84-64 victory in a match that saw now-fifth year senior Adam Voll set personal bests in points and rebounds.
Western opens the season with a 1-1 record, with a season-opening loss to the Brock Badgers followed by a slim victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Before taking on the Rams, the Mustangs will take on the U of T Varsity Blues. In their previous meeting, the Rams set a new team record for three-pointers en route to a comfortable 105-76 victory.
The dynamic of facing each team in their sole meetings of the season will be bolstered by the first back-to-back road games of 2017-2018.
“Back-to-back games always pose an interesting challenge in that the preparation period is shortened,” Popic said. “Windsor and Western differ very much offensively and each team will test our ability to defend in a different way.”
