Return home looks to ignite strong Rams squad

By Christian Ryan

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams return for their second homestead of the season in a back-to-back weekend.

Coming off of a decisive victory in Guelph over the Gryphons, the Rams will play host to the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday and Saturday night. The weekend marks their return to the Mattamy Athletic Centre, having played before two capacity crowds in early November.

Currently sitting fifth in the OUA East with a 4-2 record, the Rams will hope to boost their points position over an improving Warriors team. While the Warriors’ record stands at 2-5, the two victories have been consecutive leading into the weekend. As the Warriors begin to heat up, the Rams will have to try to hold them at bay.

Historically fighting interesting battles with the Rams, the Golden Hawks enter the weekend with a 3-4 record. Coming off of a 77-76 loss to the Queen’s Gaels that saw the team fail to come up in high pressure situations, the Golden Hawks will have a chance to build on their play against the U of T Varsity Blues on Friday before stopping at the MAC.

Assistant coach Borko Popic will take the reins of the Rams this weekend as head coach Roy Rana is in Halifax, Nova Scotia leading the Canadian national team in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. Popic has been happy with the offensive output of the Rams, with six players putting up double digits in points in their previous victory.

Leading this offensive charge has been Myles Charvis (Mississauga, Ont.) and JV Mukama (Hamilton, Ont.), however Keevon Small (Montreal, Que.) has recently risen to the occasion and put up impressive numbers. These core players will look to excite the home crowd this weekend, including the Rams’ first Pride Night against the Golden Hawks on Saturday.

The Ryerson Rams play host to the Waterloo Warriors on Friday, November 24th with an early tipoff of 7:00, followed by the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 25th at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
