Rams late-season push sees new urgency against familiar foes
TORONTO - It’s a week of familiar faces as the Ryerson Rams look to complete a season sweep of both the York Lions and the Queen’s Gaels on this week’s road trip.
As the Rams sit even for third in the standings with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, they look to opponents they’ve recently seen success against as a means of breaking a clear path to the top of the division. They are back in stride after this previous weekend’s Battle For the 6ix victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, and look to build on that momentum and ride it into the playoffs.
January 17th’s game against the Lions was certainly one for the Rams history books. Manny Diressa (Toronto, Ont.) put up 50 points - shattering his previous career best performance of 32 - becoming the first Ram to reach the landmark since 1994. However, as the Rams won that game by a comparatively tight 83-70 score given Diressa’s individual performance, Rams assistant coach Borko Popic knows they can’t take anything for granted against the Lions.
“They’re dangerous,” he said, “as they showed the last time they played here. They gave us a good run. We’ll be ready. We know the kind of talent they have.”
The York matchup is followed once again by the Gaels, who nearly gave the Rams a run for their money in January. Off the backs of strong three point performances by Jaz Bains (Brampton, Ont.) and Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.), the Gaels pushed the Rams into a more defensive play before turning around to charge for the win. A victory against the Gaels requires the entire team to be running on all cylinders, as the scoring prowess of both teams will be put to the test.
The Ryerson Rams make the now-simplified trip north to Tait McKenzie Gym, the home of the York Lions, Wednesday February 7th to face off against the Lions at 1:00 p.m. ET. They will then take the longer road to Kingston, facing the Queen’s Gaels Saturday, February 10th in the Athletics & Recreation Centre at 8:00 p.m. ET. Rams fans can catch the action live on OUA.tv before the team comes home the following weekend.
