Wilson Cup semifinal marks fight for ticket to Final 8
TORONTO - One win for one ticket to the Final 8.
The Ryerson Rams, hot off a victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the quarterfinals, are one step away from Halifax, Nova Scotia and the U SPORTS Final 8. That step, however, is perhaps against the team’s greatest nemesis: the Brock Badgers.
Having faced off against the Badgers at the beginning of the season, the November matchup saw the Badgers take a narrow overtime victory before a capacity crowd at the Mattamy Athletic Centre for one of the Rams’ famous ‘Pack the MAC’ events. Now, the Rams faithful will take the trip to St. Catharines to see if their team is going to make their trip to the crown jewel of U SPORTS basketball in the Maritimes.
The regular season’s lone matchup saw J.V. Mukama (Hamilton, Ont.) and Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) step up to feed off the crowd’s energy and lead an injury-riddled team to a close loss. Now, with high-scoring powerhouse Manny Diressa (Toronto, Ont.) healthy and firing on all cylinders, the Rams look to show how far they have come since November.
The pressure is on for the team, riding high off two consecutive OUA Wilson Cup titles. While the team will have to fight hard to maintain the level of performance seen in those previous title-winning seasons that also saw them claim silver at the Final 8, their late-season five game victory streak bodes well for a team that always comes alive in the playoffs.
The Ryerson Rams will hit the road to St. Catharines, Ont. Wednesday, February 28 to take on the Brock Badgers in the Wilson Cup Semifinal at Bob Davis Gym. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be available on OUA.tv
