Rams can't clinch three-peat in Wilson Cup loss to Ravens

By Christian Ryan

OTTAWA, Ont. - The three-peat wasn't to be as the Ryerson Rams fell to the Carleton Ravens 84-58 at the Ravens’ Nest on Saturday night in the Wilson Cup final.

In a reversal of the previous two years, the Rams and Ravens will head to the U SPORTS Final 8 national championships in Halifax with the Ravens as reigning Wilson Cup champions. The final instead acted as a repeat of last year’s national finals, with the Ravens crowned as U SPORTS champions as the Rams took silver. Now, the Rams will look to continue to flip the script in the 2018 Final 8.

Having fallen to the Ravens twice this season, the Rams were looking to surprise after defeating the Brock Badgers in a strong semifinal performance. Staying neck and neck through the first quarter, the Rams first began to falter in the second, trailing 42-34 going into halftime. In the third, the Ravens presented peak offence and defence as they held the Rams to only 9 points while they put up 23. A relatively equal fourth quarter kept the chance of a Rams comeback out of reach.

Rams' top scorer Manny Diressa (Toronto, Ont.) was held to only 3-14 from the field and 2-10 from the three, resulting in a ten point performance. Freshman Tanor Ngom (Dakar, Senegal) matched Diressa’s team-topping performance with 10 of his own. The game was not defined by any individual performances on either side, with scoring coming from throughout both rosters. Ravens’ Stanley Mayambo (Fredricton, NB) topped scoring with 17. Perhaps the Ravens’ top advantage was from the three point line, more than doubling the Rams performance 13 to 7, sinking 48.1% over Ryerson’s 20.6%.

The Rams now turn their attention to the Final 8, where they will once again compete to be U SPORTS national champions. The event takes place in Halifax, Nova Scotia from March 8-11. Look to see your Ryerson Rams broadcasted nationally on Sportsnet 360.
