TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team is excited to announce the commitment of Leyki Sorra to the team for the upcoming season.

A native of Scarborough, Ont., Sorra played for Bill Crothers S.S. in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association this season. The Colts finished the season 8-6 for fifth place but lost in the quarter-final to the eventual champions.

Sorra has overcome obstacles throughout her career, including reconstructive knee surgery, and brings a determination to her game that Rams coach Carly Clarke appreciates.

"Leyki is a natural shooter who will automatically stretch the floor. She has a great understanding for the game and a strong desire to continue to learn. Her energy and passion is also contagious," said Clarke.

Sorra's highlight of her athletic career thus far was the first time she stepped back on the court in game action following her knee surgery.

"One of my teammates and best friends Justina King was on the court for that time. She cleared out the rest of my team, drove to the hoop and kicked the ball out to me. My first attempt: no good. I think I got a little too excited because it was a travel. Next time coming down the court on offence, Justina cleared everyone out, drove in and kicked the ball to me again. Second attempt: good. The whole gym went crazy. My team was cheering, the crowd was cheering, the next teams waiting to play were cheering, and even the other team was cheering...Definitely a moment I will cherish and remember forever," Sorra described.

Sorra was a member of the Team Ontario program in the summer of 2016 with fellow Rams commits Jama Bin-Edward and Marin Scotten, though Sorra did not play in the national championship tournament.

The newest Ram will be enrolled in the Early Childhood Studies program and is excited to be staying close to home.

"I always thought I was going to go somewhere far for school because I wanted to experience somewhere new. But then I thought about all the people who would do anything to be able to live in and experience Toronto, and how lucky I am to have the opportunity to. Everything about Ryerson feels right. As soon as I come close to or step on campus, or enter the MAC, I feel a sense of pride knowing this is what I get to call home for the next four years," said Sorra.

The Rams recruiting class is now four players deep. Stay tuned for more recruit announcements as they become available.
