Rams hold off Nipissing to win second straight

By Ryan Bacic

NORTH BAY, Ont. – The Ryerson Rams picked up their second win in a row on Saturday night as they bested the Nipissing Lakers 80-57 in North Bay.

However, this was very much a game in which the final score was not indicative of either team’s true performance, as indicated by Nipissing’s explosive first half performance.

Throughout the entirety of the first two quarters, the Lakers proved to be relentless in their pursuit of the upset victory.  Greatly assisted by an otherworldly performance by junior guard Maeve Therriault (Ottawa, Ont.), who recorded 19 points in the first half while going 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, the Lakers were able to keep on the Rams heels consistently throughout the first and second quarters.  Shooting nearly sixty-percent from three, and forty-percent from the field, the Lakers seemed to be playing above the caliber of what their 2-10 record would suggest.

However, this change in expected playing style did not phase the visiting Rams squad as they maintained their composure throughout the first half.  Led in scoring by freshman guard Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.), the offensive contributions of the Rams starters proved to be more diverse in Saturday night’s contest, as four members of the starting lineup concluded the first half having already tallied ten points or more. Paired with the Rams notoriously aggressive defensive-style, the Lakers offensive surge was able to be kept at bay as the Rams led by nine points at the half.

Heading into the final two quarters of play, the hosting Lakers seemed to cool off just as the Rams were heating up.  Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) continued to lead the Rams offensively, as she finished the game with a career-high 26 points, to go along with two rebounds and one steal.  Utilizing her size and skill to her advantage on the evening, Rams forward Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) had a similarly stellar performance on the night, recording a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

The Rams will be looking to keep their winning streak alive as they take on the York Lions on Wednesday, January 17 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.  Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Rams, but for those who cannot make it, the game will be available live on and live updates will be provided on the Ryerson Rams twitter @ryersonrams.
