Rams selected to host 2019 U SPORTS women's basketball championship
TORONTO - The Ryerson University Rams are proud to announce their selection as host of the 2019 U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Final 8 national championship.
The U SPORTS selection committee made the announcement early Thursday morning.
"We are pleased to be selected to host the 2019 U SPORTS Women's Basketball Final 8. Our women's basketball team is among the best in the country," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Ivan Joseph. "Our university is looking forward to hosting another championship in the Mattamy Athletic Centre and creating an exceptional experience for all student-athletes, fans, and the city of Toronto."
The championship will be held in the Mattamy Athletic Centre arena, below the iconic Maple Leaf Gardens domed ceiling, and will be the third national championship hosted at Ryerson in the last five years. The tournament will run from Thursday, March 7 - Sunday, March 10, 2019.
"We are thrilled to be bringing the national championship to Toronto and Ryerson University," said Rams head coach, Carly Clarke. "We have demonstrated on two occasions now the ability to host world class championships in our world class facilities. I am looking forward to showcasing all that Ryerson has to offer to our national basketball community."
The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team has been a perennial contender in the OUA conference over the past four years. The Rams won their first ever Critelli Cup OUA championship in the 2015-16 season when they also won the U SPORTS silver medal.
"Obviously it's a tremendous honour for our student-athletes to get to participate in the event on their home court and we look forward to continuing to develop our program to earn our way into the tournament and be prepared to win while in it," added Clarke.
Ryerson has also hosted the 2015 CIS Men's Basketball Final 8 championship and the 2017 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball national championship.
Ryerson Athletics will announce further details about the 2019 U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Final 8 championship in the coming months.
