Rams welcome Farwell to roster

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams women’s basketball team is pleased to announce their first recruit for the 2018-19 season in Rachel Farwell.

A native of Rothesay, New Brunswick, Farwell is a forward with provincial and national team experience.

Farwell has played for Team New Brunswick for three years. In her first appearance at the national championship, Farwell led all players in blocks and field goals en route to a fourth place finish.

Following those national championships in 2015, Farwell was invited to Canada Basketball’s U16/U17 identification camp. She has appeared at a total of four national assessment camps which is where she first met Rams head coach, Carly Clarke.

“Upon meeting Carly through national camps, I knew how amazing of a coach she was and I could see us working really well together in my university years,” said Farwell.

Farwell joins the Rams from Kennebecasis Valley High School where she’s been the team captain and won provincial championships for her school.

“If I had to choose one highlight [of my athletic career], it would be winning my first provincial championship when I was in the tenth grade. That team grinded and fought so hard to put ourselves in a position for victory and brought home the first AAA women’s basketball championship that our school has ever seen,” said Farwell.

The 6-0 forward will enter the prestigious Mechanical Engineering program at Ryerson starting in September.

“We are very excited about the addition of Rachel to our program,” said Clarke. “In addition to being an exceptional student, Rachel has demonstrated her ability to be successful and rise to a challenge through her high school, provincial team, and national team training camp involvement.

“She has a natural shooting ability matched with an athletic frame and a very high ceiling. She is also a leader by example with her drive, work ethic, and positive attitude in all aspects of what she does.

“We are excited for her to bring these experiences to Ryerson, and for her to become an impactful student-athlete both on the court and throughout the Ryerson and local community.”

The Rams 2018-19 basketball season begins with training camp in September before regular season play starts in late October.
