#TheJourneyTo... first road trip of 2019 for Rams

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — After going 1-1 against two of the OUA’s top contenders last weekend, the No. 3 Ryerson Rams are looking to improve both their record and their play this weekend against the York Lions and the Queen’s Gaels.

Last Saturday saw the Rams suffer a 78-70 defeat at the hands of the No. 7 Carleton Ravens. The tables were turned on Sunday, though, as Ryerson fought their way to a 71-63 victory over the then-ranked No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Several of last weekend’s individual performances stood out among the rest. Most notably, senior guard Hayley Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) earned Ryerson’s Athlete of the Week honours after setting a career high in points (16) on Sunday against Ottawa.

In the statistics column, senior forward Katherine Follis (Toronto, Ont.) currently leads the OUA with a 57.9 field goal percentage (33-57). Sitting a few spots behind Follis is teammate Bronwyn Williams (Toronto, Ont.), ranking fourth in the league with a 54.9 field goal percentage (50-91).

Looking ahead, the Rams are set to embark on their first weekend road trip of the new year, facing two familiar foes in the Queen’s Gaels and the York Lions.

Friday night presents a difficult matchup against Queen’s. Coming off a crucial loss to the Nipissing Lakers, the Gaels currently sit fourth in the OUA East with an 8-4 record on the season.  Queen’s boasts the second-best rebounding numbers in the league (43.9 rebounds/game), sitting second to none other than the Rams (47.6 rebounds/game).

Queen’s guard Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) is among the OUA’s top scorers, ranking second in the league with 18.3 points per game. Alarie will likely match up against Ryerson’s top defenders as the Rams look to shut her down on Friday evening.

Saturday’s game may be challenging in a different way for the Rams as the team heads uptown to take on the York Lions. The Rams were 0-2 in the regular season last year against York. On the other side of the matchup, the Lions have lost five straight and will be looking to step up their game against one of the best teams in the country.

The Lions, sitting fifth in the OUA with a 5-7 record, are always a tough opponent and will likely put the Rams to the test on Saturday night.

Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Fans can catch all this weekend’s action live on
