Rams have a lot on the line in home opener
TORONTO – Wednesday, November 8 is going to prove to be one of the most electric sporting days of the season, as the women’s basketball team plays their home opener against the Brock Badgers at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at 6:00 pm.
The match itself, while running the risk of being predictable from the outset, may prove to have a lot on the line for both teams involved. For the Rams, it represents a chance at redemption, after coming off of a difficult road-trip weekend that saw Ryerson lose both contests to the Windsor Lancers and the Western Mustangs. Accumulating an initial 1-2 start on the season represents the worst three-game season starter over the past three years for the Rams, and after coming off of an incredibly successful 2016-2017 season, it leaves much to be desired.
Coming off of an 80-38 loss against the Queen’s Gaels, the visiting Brock Badgers are in search for a chance to redeem themselves. At the present moment, the Badgers have started off their first four games of the season 2-2, only narrowly beating the Western Mustangs and Laurier Golden Hawks, while suffering double digit losses to the Gaels and York Lions.
In spite of a possible increase in tenacity, the Badgers should prove to be little trouble for the Rams, as both contemporary statistics and history show. As it currently stands, the Badgers lead the OUA in total turnovers, and rank closer to the bottom of the league in total three-point conversion. If the Rams can do an effective job of forcing ball movement around the arc and restricting the access of the Badger guards to their taller forwards, they may be able stultify several of their offensive attempts. Additionally, history stands on the side of the Rams, as they have a 3-0 record against the Badgers across the past three seasons.
However, given that the Rams lost their contest to Western on November 4, a team which the Badgers were able to overcome, the home team may find the match-up more difficult than anticipated in front of a Mattamy crowd that is expected to be filled to the rafters.
Fans are encouraged to come out and #PacktheMAC to show their support for the team. However, for those who cannot attend in person, they can still catch all of the action by watching the game on OUA.tv, and by following the Ryerson Rams on twitter @ryersonrams.
