Road to the Final 8 set to begin on October 26

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men’s and women’s basketball teams will open their 2018 campaigns at home against the Toronto Varsity Blues on October 26, 2018, and both teams hold high hopes heading into the new season.

A second round exit from the playoffs saw the Rams’ women’s team suffer an 82-66 loss at the hands of the OUA and U SPORTS gold medalists, the Carleton Ravens.  This year, the Rams are hoping for a more successful end to their postseason campaign.

The men, on the other hand, will continue to hunt for their first ever U SPORTS national title. Both a provincial and national silver medal marked the 2017-18 as a successful one, but the Rams are hungry for a title and will return to the court this season with a newfound sense of tenacity.

With championship hopes in mind, the Rams will have their sights set on national competition. Ryerson will host the 2019 U SPORTS Final 8 Women’s Basketball national championship from March 7 to March 10, 2019, automatically qualifying as one of the eight participating teams. Alternatively, the men will hope to return to Halifax again this year, as Dalhousie is set to host the 2019 U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball tournament from March 7 to March 10, 2019.

Bring your costumes, Rams fans! This year’s schedule features a spooky matchup between Ryerson and Guelph on All Hallows’ Eve. The two inter-division teams only meet once a year, and it’s Ryerson’s turn to host the matchup.

The Gryphons’ women’s team finished fourth in the OUA West last season but were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by the Western Mustangs. The men missed the playoffs with a seventh-place finish in their division.

The frightening festivities are set to begin at 6:00 pm when the women face off, and the men’s game will follow at 8:00 pm.

One of the most exciting rivalries in U SPORTS will take to the court in the first few days of 2019, as the Carleton Ravens and the uOttawa Gee-Gees are set to come to town on January 5th and 6th. The Rams have frequently collided with the Ottawa teams in both the regular season and the playoffs, and the rivalry continues to grow stronger with each passing season.

Ryerson will also welcome members of the Ontario Basketball Association in the team’s annual OBA Day on Saturday against Carleton.

Tip-off is set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Friday, February 15, 2019 | Ryerson Rams vs. York Lions, Subway Series Rematch

The Friday night doubleheader will begin at 6:00pm for the women’s game and 8:00pm for the men’s.
