Rams OUA season ends in Ottawa

By Jessica Pincente

OTTAWA — The Ryerson Rams have officially been eliminated from the Critelli Cup playoffs after dropping a 74-49 contest on the road to the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night in Ottawa.

Ryerson’s loss to Carleton means the team is out of playoff contention after a loss in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive season.

The Ravens would assert dominance over the visiting Rams early in the game, making an opening three-pointer and continuing to push throughout the first quarter. Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) would sink a shot from the free-throw line to grab Ryerson’s opening point but the Rams still found themselves trailing 9-1 midway through the first quarter.

Ryerson managed to close the gap late in the first, but Carleton pulled away after a few well-placed shots from beyond the arc to take an 18-8 lead at the end of the quarter.

Ryerson’s struggles carried over into the second as the team continued to shoot around 24% from the field through much of the first half.

The Ravens would hold the visiting Rams to a single-digit scoring marker for the second straight quarter, taking a 38-17 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw a more balanced offensive effort on both sides as the Rams managed to score 17 while improving their numbers from the field. Even still, the Rams found themselves trailing by 26 points with just one quarter remaining in the game.

Ryerson’s fourth-quarter efforts were not enough to overcome the dominant Ravens. Carleton outscored the Rams for the fourth consecutive quarter and eventually took a 74-49 win to end Ryerson's OUA title hopes.

Paska contributed a double-double in her final OUA playoff game, finishing the match with 10 rebounds and 10 points. Fifth-year guard Cara Tiemens (Newmarket, Ont.) also had 10 points in the contest.

Despite the loss, the season doesn't end here for the Rams, as the hosts of the 2019 U SPORTS Final 8 national championship receive automatic entry into the tournament. The Rams will hit the court at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on March 7, 2019, as they kick off their quest to claim the program’s first-ever national banner.
