Thanksgiving food drive a success

By Andrea Elliott
TORONTO - This fall, the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team initiated a Thanksgiving food drive with all proceeds donated to The Covenant House.

The Covenant House is a local homeless youth shelter in Toronto that provides resources and support for Toronto youth who are struggling to find their independence.

The team put together and decorated collection boxes that were placed at the front desk of the Mattamy Athletic Centre, Pitman Hall and in each varsity team changeroom. The Rams challenged the other varsity teams to collect as much food as they could with a team prize to be won for the team that collected the most.

An overwhelming amoung of support was returned from the varsity athletes as a majoirty of teams surpassed the minimum 50lbs, and with a few reaching over 100lbs! In total, 433 items of food were donated to The Covenant House in time for Thanksgiving.

As the food was dropped off, The Covenant House expressed their gratitude for the donations.

"We chose this initaive becuase (we) wanted to be able to give back to the community and with Thanksgiving taking place in the middle of (our) season, it was the perfect time to reflect upon how fortunate we all are and give back to those in need," said midfielder Gillian Rossi, one of the lead organizers of the event.
