Men's and women's soccer to kick off season against UOIT

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - With the release of the 2018 OUA soccer schedules, it has been made official that the Ryerson Rams men’s and women’s teams will kick off their 2018 campaigns against the UOIT Ridgebacks on August 25, 2018, at Downsview Park in Toronto.

After qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2011, the women’s team will look to build on their success from last season. Seven regular season wins made the 2017 campaign the most successful in eight years, but a first-round loss to the Laurentian Voyageurs cut their postseason run short. This year, the Rams will be out for revenge as they enter into the season with high hopes and a new look.

On the men’s side, the Rams will return to the pitch after winning a bronze medal at the OUA Final Four tournament last season. A strong recruiting class and a competitive edge puts the Rams in the mix for their first OUA banner, and the team will continue to strive towards their continued goal of qualifying for the U SPORTS National Championship tournament.

The 2018 U SPORTS National Championships will be held from November 8-11, 2018, with the women’s tournament hosted by the uOttawa Gee-Gees and the men’s hosted by the UBC Thunderbirds.

KEY DATES

SATURDAY AUGUST 25, 2018 | RYERSON RAMS vs. UOIT RIDGEBACKS, HOME AND SEASON OPENER

The Rams will be looking to hit the ground running as both teams face off in their season openers against the UOIT Ridgebacks on August 25, 2018, at Downsview Park.

The women’s team will have their work cut out for them against UOIT. After finishing first in the East last season with a 14-0-2 record, the Ridgebacks will look to continue their streak of dominance this year. Historically, the Rams have struggled against UOIT, posting a 1-3-0 record against them across the last four seasons.

On the men’s side, the Rams will hope to open their season with a strong showing against the Ridgebacks. Ryerson has lost just one game to UOIT since October 2014, and the team will be looking to extend their streak of dominance into the 2018 season.

The women’s season opener will kick off at 1:00pm and the men’s game will begin at 3:00pm.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 | RYERSON RAMS at TORONTO VARSITY BLUES, ROUND TWO REMATCH

Last year’s season ended in heartbreak for the Toronto Varsity Blues’ men’s team after the Rams took a 1-0 victory in the second round of the playoffs in October. This year, the three-time OUA bronze medalists will face off against their cross-town rivals, the Rams, who snapped their medal drought in the 2017 postseason after losing three straight third-place matchups to the Varsity Blues (2014, 2015, 2016).

The biannual regular season matchup features an always-exciting game between the two competing Toronto schools. Varsity Stadium will play host to the two games in early September, with the women’s team taking on their cross-city rivals at 1:00pm and the men facing off at 3:15pm.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 20, 2018 | RYERSON RAMS VS. LAURENTIAN VOYAGEURS, BACK FOR REVENGE

A double overtime loss in the first round of the playoffs last season at the hands of the Laurentian Voyageurs’ women’s team cut Ryerson’s playoff run short. This year, both teams have a new look, and the Rams will look to avenge last year’s early postseason exit as they host the Voyageurs on home turf in late October.

On the men’s side, the Rams have gone 5-1-0 against the Voyageurs in the last three years, scoring 14 goals and allowing just two in that time span.  The matchups will be played at Downsview Park, with the women’s game kicking off at 3:30pm and the men’s game following soon after at 5:30pm.
