Rams looking to spark offensive magic against Toronto
TORONTO - After a strong showing on opening weekend, the Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team will be looking to top a familiar foe this Sunday in the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Last Saturday, the Rams battled their way to a crucial 1-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks to open up their 2018 campaign. The following day, the team would play to a 1-1 draw against the Trent Excalibur.
BreAnnah Webster (Pickering, Ont.) had an assist on each of Ryerson’s goals last weekend, running the ball down the wing and crossing it in front of the net where Rams forwards Alex Rodkin (Whitby, Ont.) and Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.) stood to complete the plays.
Rodkin finished the weekend with 11 shots, which places her second in the OUA behind Toronto’s Natasha Klasios (Unionville, Ont.). After a clean sheet performance on Saturday, Rams goalkeeper Elisa Lapadula (Brampton, Ont.) sits second in the league with a .933 save percentage.
With opening weekend behind them, the Rams will look to the Varsity Blues for another tight matchup this coming Sunday.
Toronto’s opening weekend results sang a familiar tune: the Varsity Blues tied the Excalibur 1-1 on Saturday while walking away with a 2-1 win over UOIT on Sunday.
In 2017, the Rams finished one point above the Varsity Blues in the standings.
In terms of the program’s past head-to-head matchups, the Rams haven’t faced off against the Varsity Blues since 2016. Ryerson has previously struggled against Toronto — throughout the program’s 30-year history, the Rams have yet to win a game against the Varsity Blues.
Consistent play and a strong offensive showing should help the Rams see some level of success against their cross-town rivals.
The two teams will face off at Varsity Field on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for all the latest scores and updates.
