Women's soccer to kick-off season vs. Laurentian
TORONTO — For the rebuilding Ryerson Rams women's soccer team, they will take another step closer to building their culture and a competitive program in the 2017 OUA season.
The Rams will head into their next campaign with nearly a dozen new recruits, but the same desire to win and win the right way. With the regular season just 51 days away, we've highlighted some dates to circle on your calendars.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 26th, 2017 | RAMS vs LAURENTIAN — REGULAR SEASON OPENER
Nothing is more exciting for a competitive team than the start of a new season. After waiting 307 days to take the field together once again, all of the months of preparation, training, and team bonding give way to a fresh start. Ryerson begins 2017 at Downsview Park—their home ground for the year—against the Laurentian Voyageurs. This is the second straight year that Ryerson has played Laurentian in their opener. Since the first Rams women's soccer team took to the pitch in 1986, they have never won a regular season opener. The new-look Rams have many goals this year, and starting on a winning note for the first time in program history would be a great step in the right direction.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th, 2017 | RAMS vs UOIT — CLASH WITH THE CHAMPS
Last season was the year of the Ridgeback in OUA women's soccer, with UOIT claiming a provincial title for the first time in school history and going on to win bronze at the U SPORTS Final 8 Championship in Wolfsville, N.S. So what does that mean for the Rams? Simply put: this game will be one of their biggest challenges of the year. Having said that, they should not fear their GTA rivals, but rather welcome a chance to see how the measure up against one of the best programs in the country. After just four regular season games they'll face the Ridgebacks at home, and then travel to Vaso's field a week later for the rematch with one game against Trent in between. With the latter match taking place near the midway mark of the season, it will give the Rams coaching staff a great look at where their program fits in with the rest of the conference.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20th, 2017 | RAMS vs QUEEN'S — FINAL PLAYOFF PUSH
In their penultimate game of the regular season, the Rams will entertain the Queen's Gaels who placed second in the OUA last season and finished fourth at Nationals. Heading into their final homestand, this could be the deciding game in the Rams season, potentially determining whether or not they will make the playoffs for the first time since 2011. The temperature may have cool off, but the heat will be on the Ryerson Rams women's soccer team.
