QUEBEC CITY, Que. - The Ryerson Rams sent Joel Perera-Satgunem, Mike Konstantopoulos, Rebecca Verlaan and Anna Cianni to the U Sports (CIS) Championships on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City on November 12.
The four Rams had earned that honour based on terrific seasons by all of them, culminating in strong showing at the OUA Championships in Toronto. Approximately 165 men and women competed in each race over the challenging course under sunny and -5C wind chill temperatures, including 22 full teams and partial squads from an additional 11 universities.
The host team, the Universite of Laval, handily won the men’s team title for the first time while the University of Guelph narrowly held off a strong Queen's University team by 7 points to win the women’s team title.
Ryerson's Rebecca Verlaan placed 99th in 24.27 with Anna Cianni placing 146th in 25.55. On the men’s side Joel Perera-Satgunem placed 110th in 34.09 and Mike Konstantopoulos 133rd in 35.05.
“We are a young team in our second year of existence, and while our teams as a whole didn’t qualify, we felt it was important for the ones who did individually to compete here for their development. They certainly did themselves and Ryerson proud,” commented head coach Tim Uuksulainen.
The cross country season is now over and the focus now shifts to the indoor track season.
