TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams cross country team kicked off their season on Sunday, September 10 with a number of impressive results at the Longboat Toronto Island Run.

The Longboat Run features a 5k and a 10k, which act as the tryouts for the women’s and men’s teams, respectively.

The women ran first, dominating the rest of the field and grabbing the top eight female spots in the race.

Most people would say that five kilometres of racing is more than enough activity for one day, but for Rebecca Verlaan and Sylvie Antoun, the Longboat Run was their second race of the morning.

Earlier on Sunday, Verlaan and Antoun lined up at the start of the Canadian 5k Road Race Championships in Yorkville, and in under twenty minutes they had both crossed the finish line and were ready to head to their next race.

Verlaan finished in a quick time of 18:50 with Antoun not far behind in 19:29, times which earned them fifth and sixth place finishes in their respective age groups.

After finishing, the two Rams made their way from Yorkville to the harbour front, got on a ferry and raced to meet their fellow Rams at the start of another race.

Despite running on tired legs, Verlaan and Antoun crossed the finish line as the top two women, once again clocking sub-20 minute efforts.

Not long after the women had secured the top spots in their race, the men’s team lined up to start the 10k.

Team veteran Michael Konstantopoulos established himself at the front of the pack early on, and he did not falter, using his momentum to carry him to a fifth-place finish in a time of 34:11.

Hot on Konstantopoulos’ heels was a small group of Ryerson runners who worked together for much of the race, pushing one another towards each of their eventual sub-36 minute finishes.

The remainder of the team was not far behind, and the Rams dished out another impressive showing on the day with five men in the top 15 spots overall and every member finishing in the top 50.

Head Coach Albert Dell’Apa and assistant coaches Laura McLean and Joel Perera were impressed by the team’s performance and fitness so early in the season.

The Rams are looking to build from the strong start to the season next weekend, September 23, when they head to London, Ont. to compete against a strong field at the Western Invitational.
