TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams badminton team finished sixth overall at the OUA Championships this past weekend hosted by the York Lions.

The Rams started the competition in pool play with the host Lions and defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues. Ryerson defeated York 7-3 with the women carrying the load, winning both women's singles and women's doubles matches plus both mixed doubles matches. Avenie Lee, Alison Chiu, Renee Wong and Bernita Ng all won both events they were in. The men's duo of Nathan Cheng and Oscar Thompson picked up the seventh point for the Rams.

In their next match, the Varsity Blues showed why they were championship calibre as they swept the Rams 10-0. The closest game in that series was the men's doubles match with Cheng partnering with Adwin Lau. The pair split the first two games but fell 21-17 in the deciding third game.

The 1-1 record in pool play advanced the Rams to the championship side of the bracket where they faced the Western Mustangs. In the elimination round the order of events were randomized and required a team to just win the majority of the games. The Rams fell 6-0 and did not play the final four events. The random draw did not allow for the men's doubles games to be played, an area where the Rams were expected to play well.

The loss pushed the Rams to the fifth place match against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. In a tight contest, the Rams had to settle for sixth place after a 6-4 losing result. It was the women who carried the team again in this one, as the four Rams points came from both women's singles matches, one women's doubles, and one mixed doubles.
