Rams close out 2017 with OT loss to Queen's
KINGSTON, Ont. - A strong showing in the second period was not enough for the Ryerson Rams to push past the number eight-ranked Queen’s Gaels, as Jessica Wakefield’s (Lucan, Ont.) overtime goal would help her team claim victory over the Rams by a final score of 3-2.
The Gaels would strike first in the matchup off a misplay from a Ryerson defender behind the net. Queen’s took a 1-0 lead in the early minutes of the game, and would carry that lead into the dressing room at the end of the first period.
Ryerson’s Kayla Karbonik (St. Andrews, Man.) tied up the game midway through the second period, scoring her first goal of the year on backhanded shot that beat the Queen’s goaltender. Soon after, Lauren Nicholson (Dresden, Ont.) would tally the goal that would gain a 2-1 lead for Ryerson with just over one minute to play in the second.
The Rams would maintain their lead until the dying seconds of the game, when Queen’s Hailey Wilson scored the goal to send the game to overtime.
Queen’s wouldn’t waste any time getting to work in OT, scoring the deciding goal 1:40 into the period. The Rams suffered a 3-2 overtime loss on the matchup, taking home a single point through two games this weekend.
Though the Rams didn’t tally a win in the matchup, there are several positive takeaways from the game against Queen’s. The Gaels have a perfect 6-0 record in their home arena, sitting atop the OUA undefeated in regulation. The Rams presented a tough challenge for Queen’s in the matchup, and almost came away with a win.
Sunday’s game marked the last game of 2017 for the Rams, who close out the year with a 3-3-4-1 record. The team will open up second semester at home against the Windsor Lancers on January 6th, 2018.
