Rams wrap up regular season at home

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO - With only two games remaining in the OUA regular season, the Ryerson Rams will be looking to close out the year with a victory against the UOIT Ridgebacks and the No. 7 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons.

The Rams, sitting sixth in their conference and having recently clinched a playoff berth, are coming off an unfortunate loss to the Windsor Lancers last weekend.  With playoff seeding yet to be determined, the Rams’ first-round opponent will be confirmed after scores are finalized from this weekend.  Ryerson could move as high as fourth place or as low as seventh depending on the results.

The team’s loss to Windsor served as a reminder that there’s still room for improvement looking ahead to the playoffs.  Ryerson’s special teams sit on two opposite ends of the scale - the Rams have scored one goal on 25 power play opportunities in last six games, but their penalty kill has gone 19 for 19 in their last five.   Special teams will likely play a big factor in Ryerson’s matchup against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Thursday.

The Ridgebacks will be taking on the postseason-bound Rams after being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs last Friday. UOIT has a 6-2-12-3 record on the season with one of their wins coming from a 5-4 victory over the Rams on November 25th, 2017.  Though the Ridgebacks are a typically low-scoring team, they capitalized on four power play opportunities and ultimately bested the Rams during special teams play earlier in the season.  Ryerson will need to stay disciplined if they want to walk away from the game with three points.

In their final game of the regular season - and a potential first-round playoff preview - the Rams will face the visiting Guelph Gryphons at 2:15 pm on Saturday afternoon.  The Gryphons have a 13-4-6-0 record on the season, currently ranking third in the OUA and seventh in the country.  They’re also the highest scoring team in the league with 69 goals in 23 games.  The two teams haven’t faced each other since October 19th where Ryerson took a 4-3 victory on Gryphon home ice.  If the standings remain static after this weekend, the sixth-seeded Rams will face the third-seeded Gryphons in the first round of the playoffs.
