Rams struggle to produce in loss to Nipissing

By Jessica Pincente

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Two goals were not enough to push the Ryerson Rams past the Nipissing Lakers in Saturday's afternoon matchup, as the Lakers took the victory by a final score of 3-2.

With today’s loss, the Rams extend their losing streak to two games, the longest of the season so far.

The Nipissing Lakers took a 1-0 lead off a power play midway through the first period, and would tally their next goal just 39 seconds into the second period to put themselves up 2-0.

Ryerson’s Elexa Pakozdy (Port Coquitlam, B.C) would tally her third goal of the season, and the Rams seemed to regain life as the team now trailed 2-1.

Rams forward Brooklyn Gemmill (Cambridge, Ont.) would score with just 12 seconds to play in the second period, and the team headed into the dressing room tied 2-2 with the Lakers.  With her goal today, Gemmill now sits second on the team in scoring, tallying eight points through nine games on the season so far.

The Lakers would strike first (and last) in the third period, as team-leading scorer Maria Dominico (North Bay, Ont.) tallied the goal that would end up being the eventual game-winner.

The Lakers would finish the game with a 3-2 victory, outshooting Ryerson 25-15 through three periods.  Rams goaltender Rachel Seeley (Ottawa, Ont.) finished the game with a 0.880 save percentage.

The Nipissing Lakers officially overtook the Rams in the standings with their victory today, and Ryerson now sits sixth in the OUA while the Lakers have now claimed the fifth spot.

On the same road-trip last season, the Rams came out of their two games against Nipissing and Laurentian with a 0-2 record, losing 2-0 to the Lakers and 1-0 to the Voyageurs.  The Rams can only hope for better results this year, and have a chance to come out with a 0.500 record after tomorrow’s game.

Ryerson will travel to Sudbury on Sunday to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs at 1:50 pm.  Watch the Rams take on the Voyageurs live on at puck-drop, or follow along with us on Twitter, @RyersonRams, using the hashtag #weRrams.
