Top ranked Rams cap road trip, make home opener Sunday
TORONTO - The No. 2 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams are coming home for the first time in 2017-2018. First, they must face the also undefeated York Lions on their court.
Ryerson enters the weekend boasting a 2-0 record, opening the season with a 3-1 victory over defending OUA champions McMaster Marauders and a 3-0 shutout over the Trent Excalibur. Friday night, they face the 3-0 Lions before their Sunday home opening rematch with the Excalibur.
The Rams have opened the season continuing the precedent set in winning the pre-season Queen’s Invitational. Tournament standouts, fifth-years Adam Anagnostopoulos (Waterloo, Ont.), Brendan Kewin (Milton, Ont.), and Lucas Coleman (Brooklin, Ont.) have lead the team on and off the court to set a tone for the season and see them stand out in national rankings.
Marking their first multi-game weekend of the season, they will have a quicker turnaround for Sunday’s game than the preparation seen for previous matches. The Lions have had back-to-back preparation in tight, five set matches against the RMC Paladins and Queen’s Gaels. In their first of two matchups of the season, the Rams go to York on a hot streak on top of a week’s rest and preparation.
The turnaround of Sunday’s match will be against a familiar Trent squad, the two teams having squared up just last week. While the final match score was a shutout in favour of the Rams, that does not tell the tense tale that was seen on court. Close sets are assured with a scrappy Excalibur team, but the Rams have a chance to make history repeat itself on their own turf.
Tait McKenzie Gymnasium will host the Ryerson Rams Friday at 8:00pm as they face off against the York Lions. Ryerson students and fans welcome the Rams home to the Mattamy Athletic Centre Sunday at 3:00pm against the Trent Excalibur.
