Vukets claims bronze at beach nationals

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - Second year setter Greg Vukets earned a spot on the podium with a bronze medal victory at the Volleyball Canada senior beach national championship this past weekend at Ashbridge's Bay in Toronto.

Vukets partnered with Ivan Reka, a native of Longueuil, Que. who has been training with the Canadian national beach team.

The duo went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the playoff bracket, losing only to the pairing of Nusbaum/Plantinga, the eventual silver medalists.

In the round of 16, Vukets and Reka defeated a familiar face in Joel Hannan. Hannan will be joining the Rams this season as he begins his Masters of Business Adminstration in Human Resources. Hannan and his partner ultimately finished 13th.

Vukets and Reka got by the Quebec partnership of Fecteau-Boutin/Rosso in the quarter-final to set up a showdown against Canadian Olympians, Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter in the semifinal. The Olympians got the better of Vukets and Reka, but the pair was able to bounce back with a 2-0 sweep over Kazhamiaka/Grabovskyy to claim the bronze medal.

Vukets, Hannan and the rest of the Rams men's volleyball team will open their OUA regular season schedule on October 24 at home against the Brock Badgers.
