Rams have sights set on return to win column

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - After a disappointing road trip last weekend with two losses to No. 7 Windsor and to Western, the Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team is looking to regroup and get back in the win column this weekend.

The Rams took the first set off the nationally ranked Lancers last Friday and looked to be in good shape for an upset win, but then ultimately lost the next six sets of their road trip to fall 3-1 to Windsor and 3-0 to Western the next night.

Ryerson, now an even 3-3 on the season, will head back on the road in search of a pair of wins this weekend. The trip starts close to home, with a visit to the York Lions on Friday evening. The Lions are a game behind the Rams with a 2-3 record through their opening five matches.

The Rams and Lions have had some memorable matches in the past few seasons as the teams battled for divisional supremacy but both teams appear to be in the same "reloading" mode as they hover near the middle of the pack in the standings. York is coming off a 3-0 sweep of the RMC Paladins last weekend as they claimed their second win of the season. Despite their record, the Lions possess a potent offence, averaging 12.56 kills per set which ranks them second in the OUA. The Rams will need to have a solid blocking game on Friday to disrupt the Lions' rhythm.

Following Friday night's contest the Rams will head north to take on the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday night in North Bay. The Lakers have played just four games thus far but their 3-1 record has them off to a good start. Speaking of good starts, the Lakers have a strong service game, averaging 2.0 aces per set, which puts them fourth in the league. The Rams will need to be on their toes and have a good first contact in order to set up their own offence for success.

Their 3-3 record may not be the start the Rams wanted as a unit, but first year right side hitter Xander Ketrzynski has had a dream start to his university career. Ketrzynski is averaging 5.0 kills per set and 6.0 points per set, which has him atop the OUA and U SPORTS leader boards by a wide margin. Look for him to have another big weekend for the Rams.

Action begins for the men's volleyball team on November 23 at 8:00 p.m. when they visit the York Lions. Then the team will head to North Bay to take on the Nipissing Lakers on November 24 at 8:00 p.m. Stay locked to the Rams Twitter feed for all the updates.
