Rams top OUA East despite loss to Lakers

By Christian Ryan

NORTH BAY, Ont. - As one season ends, a whole other is just beginning.

The Ryerson Rams turn their attention to the postseason following a regular season ending defeat to the Nipissing Lakers 3-1 at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletic Centre. Despite coming out strong, the Rams would ultimately fall to the same Lakers team that they defeated in a close five sets a month ago.

Having struggled out of the gate in recent weeks, the Rams showed a refreshing pace in the first set. Wanting to make an impression early after struggling earlier in the weekend against the RMC Paladins, the Rams blanked the Lakers 25-9 in the first set to show they meant business and would not play into the Lakers' home court advantage.

The Lakers wouldn’t take the fight lying down, as they would force the Rams into a timeout relatively quickly in the second as they took a 9-7 lead looking to force their way back into contention. The Rams would fight to keep it close, but a push by the Lakers would see them take to the technical timeout with a 16-12 lead. The Rams were down, but not out as they clawed back to 20-23 late in the set before ultimately falling 25-22.

Looking to take back control of the game in the third set, the Rams led 16-13 at technical timeout. Facing a 22-22 tie late in the set, the Rams would fall once again 25-23 to trail 2-0. The fourth set continued the dominant form taken by the Lakers, leading 16-9 at the technical. The Rams would press the issue late, coming within three of the victory. However, the comeback would fall short as the Lakers took the final set 25-22 to claim a 3-1 victory.

The usual suspects of Adam Anagnostopoulos (Waterloo, Ont.) and Brendan Kewin (Milton, Ont.) remained at the helm of the team as they closed out their OUA regular season careers, but rookie standout Sean Shultis (Springfield, Va.) has also begun to establish himself as a future leader for the program.

Ryerson will host an OUA quarter-final next Saturday, March 3rd as the Rams look to regroup and make a push for the OUA title.
