Rams withstand Trent pressure for 10th win

By Andrea Elliott

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - The Trent Excalibur gave the Ryerson Rams a run for their money on Saturday, but the Rams withstood the pressure to earn a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-23) victory.

The winless Excalibur put a strong effort together to force the Rams into some tough moments, but the now 10-5 Rams were able to come out on the winning side.

In the opening set neither team hit particularly well, but a slight advantage in 10 kills to eight helped them squeak out a tight 25-23 decision to take a 1-0 lead.

Despite dropping the first set it felt like the Excalibur could sense a close game and they equalized in the second, winning an equally tight set 25-23 to tie the match at 1-1.

Ryerson mustered only six kills in the third set but limited themselves to just one error, and it was their efficiency combined with Trent's 11 miscues that guided the Rams to an easy 25-13 set win to take the 2-1 overall advantage.

In the fourth the teams played each other tightly but Ryerson claimed the victory by a 25-23 scoreline to end the match.

Joel Hannan led the Rams with 16 total points on the night on 11 kills, three blocks (two solo, two assisted), and two service aces. Xander Ketrzynski added a team-high 14 kills.

Trent's Nicholas Taylor led the Excalibur with 14 kills in the losing effort.

Ryerson returns to the court next Friday, February 8 when they welcome the Waterloo Warriors to Coca-Cola Court for an 8:00 p.m. start.
